StarMate Safe Dating Advice
Not for one night, but for the one.
Meeting someone new can feel magical—that spark, that curiosity, that pull between two stars. But even in the most cosmic connections, safety always comes first. Whether you’re chatting through the app or meeting in person, trust your instincts and take steps to protect yourself.
We can’t control the actions of others, but together we can make the StarMate universe a safer, more respectful place for everyone.
1. Online Safety
Never Send Money or Share Financial Information
No matter how convincing the story sounds, never send money or share bank details with someone you’ve met on StarMate. Real connections don’t come with payment requests. If someone asks you for money or financial help, report it to us right away at hello@starmate.app.

Protect Your Personal Information
Keep your private life private—at least until you truly know and trust someone. Avoid sharing your home or work address, daily routines, or other details that could reveal your location. If you’re a parent, limit what you share about your children.
Stay on StarMate
We use in-app safety systems and message filters to protect you. Scammers and bad actors often try to move the chat to text or WhatsApp too quickly. Stay in the app until you’re comfortable and confident that your match is genuine.
Be Wary of Long-Distance or Overseas Relationships
If someone says they’re from your country but currently “stuck abroad”—and especially if they ask for money—that’s a red flag. Also be cautious with anyone who avoids video calls or in-person meetings for too long. Authentic connection means showing up.
Report Suspicious or Harmful Behavior
If something feels off, say something. We take reports seriously. Examples include:
- Requests for money or gifts
- Underage users
- Harassment or threats
- Offensive or manipulative messages
- Fake profiles or impersonation
- Spam, scams, or sales promotions
You can report behavior directly from a profile or chat, or by emailing hello@starmate.app.
Protect Your Account
Use a strong, unique password. Never share your login code or password with anyone—even if they claim to be from StarMate. We will never ask for your credentials. If you get an email or message requesting them, report it immediately.
2. Meeting in Person
Take Your Time
There’s no rush. Chat, ask questions, and maybe do a video call first. You deserve to feel confident about who you’re meeting.
Meet in Public, Stay in Public
Choose a safe, well-lit, public place for your first few meetups. Avoid private homes, hotel rooms, or secluded areas. If someone pressures you otherwise, end the date.
Tell a Friend or Family Member
Before you go out, let someone know who you’re meeting, where, and when. Share your location if possible, and keep your phone charged.
Control Your Transportation
Plan how you’ll arrive and leave. Drive yourself or use a rideshare so you can leave anytime you want. Always trust your intuition.
Know Your Limits
Be mindful with alcohol or other substances—they can cloud judgment. Never feel pressured to drink or do something that makes you uncomfortable.
Keep Your Belongings and Drinks Safe
Never leave your drink or personal items unattended. Only accept drinks directly from staff, and keep your belongings (especially phone and wallet) close to you.
If You Feel Uncomfortable, Leave
You don’t owe anyone your time. If something feels off, it probably is. Excuse yourself or ask for help from nearby staff.
3. LGBTQ+ Travel Safety
We celebrate love in all forms, across all constellations. But not every place in the world is equally open. Some countries have laws that make it unsafe to express LGBTQ+ identities or relationships.
Before traveling, check the local laws and LGBTQ+ rights in your destination. If you’re in a place where it may be risky, consider logging out or temporarily removing the app.
Some law enforcement or individuals in certain regions have misused dating apps for entrapment. Always prioritize your safety, and stay informed. You can explore global legal resources at ILGA World.
4. Sexual Health & Consent
Protect Yourself
Condoms greatly reduce the risk of STIs like HIV. Some infections, like HPV or herpes, can also spread through skin contact—vaccinations can help reduce those risks. Protect yourself and your partner.
Know Your Status
Get tested regularly—not every STI shows symptoms. Staying aware of your health is a sign of care for yourself and for your partner.
Talk About It
Honest conversation builds real trust. Before becoming intimate, discuss boundaries and sexual health openly. It might feel awkward, but communication is a sign of respect.
Consent
Consent is the foundation of every real connection. It must be clear, enthusiastic, and ongoing. You can change your mind at any time. If your partner is unsure, uncomfortable, or under the influence, stop immediately. No one ever owes sex to anyone.
5. Resources & Emergency Help
Even if you follow every safety tip, sometimes things can still go wrong. If something happens, it’s not your fault. Help and support are available.
- To report an incident or get support, contact us at hello@starmate.app.
- For professional emotional or trauma support, you can reach out to Throughline or similar local organizations.
- If you are in immediate danger or need urgent help, call 911 (U.S. and Canada) or your local emergency number.
Your safety comes first. Always. And when both hearts feel safe—that’s when real magic happens.
